How to Prepare Fish Curry in Tamil

Fish curry is a popular and delightful dish in Tamil cuisine, known for its rich flavors and aromatic spices. If you’re looking to prepare this mouthwatering dish at home, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to prepare fish curry in Tamil style.

Ingredients

Before you start, gather the following ingredients:

– 500g of fresh fish (like pomfret, snapper, or tilapia)
– 1 large onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves of garlic, minced
– 1 inch piece of ginger, minced
– 2 green chilies, slit
– 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
– 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
– 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
– 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
– 1 teaspoon of fenugreek powder
– 1/2 teaspoon of asafoetida (hing)
– 1/2 cup of coconut milk
– 2 tablespoons of oil
– Salt to taste
– Fresh curry leaves
– Coriander leaves for garnishing

Preparation

1. Start by cleaning and cutting the fish into bite-sized pieces. Make sure to remove all the bones and skin.
2. In a bowl, add the fish pieces, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and let it marinate for about 15 minutes.
3. Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the asafoetida and let it sizzle for a few seconds.
4. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
5. Add the minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Cook for another 2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
6. Now, add the red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, and fenugreek powder. Stir well and cook for a minute.
7. Add the marinated fish pieces and mix well. Cook for about 5 minutes until the fish is almost done.
8. Add the coconut milk and bring the curry to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
9. Once the curry thickens and the fish is fully cooked, add the curry leaves and fresh coriander leaves. Stir well and turn off the heat.

Serving
